High Density Extruder Case Study
User: Full product line dairy wholesaler
Materials: Returned dairy products and expired materials, including fluid milk, ice cream, cottage cheese, fruit juice and general plant refuse
BEFORE INSTALLATION OF EXTRUDER
MONTHLY WASTE VOLUME: 9 loads, 30 cubic yards each Average of 23.4 tons per month
MONTHLY EXPENSE – HAULING & TRANSPORTATION: $2,947.00
This dairy plant was utilizing 2 – 30 yard self-contained compactor/container units and an S- shaped dewatering device for the removal of liquid from returned products. Liquid was used for animal feed, with approximately 400 gallons per day recovered.
AFTER INSTALLATION OF EXTRUDER
MONTHLY WASTE VOLUME: 1 load, 35 cubic yards each Average of 8.5 tons per month
MONTHLY EXPENSE – HAULING & TRANSPORTATION: $2,757.00
In September 1996, this dairy plant installed a Sebright Products Model 4030X High Density Extruder. The reasons for changing from their current system to the Extruder system included:
- Increased enforcement of local wastewater disposal regulations
- Material going into the compactor was too wet to be accepted at the disposal facility
- Unacceptable performance from old equipment (leaking, breakdowns, poor dewatering capability)
After the Model 4030X Extruder was installed, liquid recovery from the waste stream was doubled, resulting in loads that were substantially drier, thus conforming to Subtitle D Regulations for landfill disposal. General housekeeping was improved, labor savings in the disposal of returned products were realized and outdated equipment was replaced with state-of-the-art equipment that will provide excellent service well into the next century. All of these goals were met, FOR LESS MONTHLY COST THAN THE OLD SYSTEM!!
